Project overview

We are working to develop materials and strategies designed to address the needs of a culturally diverse group of students that are often first-generation college attendees, to excite students about the material in general and organic chemistry, and to shift the “gatekeeper” mentality typical in large introductory science courses. These changes will be accomplished through a focus on green chemistry principles in newly designed labs and concept videos, through lectures focused more on active and group learning, and through student peers and near-peers providing examples of success and helping to build a community of learners. Through these Green chemistry, Active-learning, and Peer-led experiences, we will develop materials and strategies that will bridge the GAP in minority student success in the sciences, leading to increased student motivation and retention in STEM majors.

This project is funded by the National Sciences Foundation through the Improving Undergraduate STEM Education: Hispanic-Serving Institutions Program (HSI Program) under award number 1832538.
